SCI-SPY
By Doug Moench,Paul Gulacy
Publisher: Vertigo - DC Comics
One thousand years after the Earth was destroyed, vestiges of the human race were resettled on seventeen planets of the Arcturus System. However, ideal living conditions had only been achieved on five of the planets. The population of the twelve outer worlds harbor resentment and consider themselves oppressed, resorting to sabotage and terrorism in lieu of civic debate. As always in these situations, mercenaries with no real interest in the argument attempt to capitalize on the uneasy political climate. Into this milieu comes Sebastian Starchild, an agent of SCI-Spy, to quell these disagreements with his hands-on, personal touch.
Doug Moench and Paul Gulacy who first achieved notoriety with Master of Kung Fu, reteam for this James-Bond-in-Space mini-series. Gulacy’s art is slick and stylish as befitting the espionage theme.
A sometimes tongue-in-cheek send up of James Bond in outer space. In the best tradition of Keith Laumer (Retief's War), Moench and Gulacy introduce us to Sebastian Starchild, who answers to a super-computer he calls Motherbank and uses the most sophisticated of vehicles and gadgets (like Orb, his mobile computer and attack system) but refuses to get cybernetic enhancements to his body. It's 1,000 years since Earth was destroyed and the remaining humans living on 17 planets in the Arcturus system are in the midst of a galactic Cold War between the Inner and the Outer Worlds. Militant fundamentalists called ShadowBlack feed the chaos with money from the Outer World backers.
Starchild's mission is infiltrate the orbiting sin palace known as the Pleasure Wheel to find and interrogate Attila Lazlo, a slimy gambler working as a courier for ShadowBlack. But shadowy back room dealings can become violent whether in back alleys or high orbit and before Starchild can get all of the information he wants, he's fighting for his life. Meanwhile, in the neutral zone between the Inner and Outer Worlds, 11 enigmatic cubes fly through space defying any explanation or deterrent. S.C.I. Spy sends in the deliciously deadly Isis Nile to investigate. What's in the cubes? Would you believe flesh-eating robotic insects? This is going to be a wild ride,
