Swamp Thing first appeared in House of Secrets #92. This monster was once Doctor Alec Holland, a brilliant biochemist who was working on research in the far recesses of the bayou. When he refused to sell out his research to a gang of thugs, they bombed his laboratory. Holland was covered in the flaming chemicals, which interacted with the swampy vegetation to transform him into this hideous man/monster.

This first Swamp Thing title began in 1972, and featured art by the great Bernie Wrightson, who penciled the first ten issues.
