The end of a millennium is a historic event and is as good a reason as any to reprint significant issues from the past. From Action Comics No. 1 at the dawn of the Golden Age to JLA No. 1 of much more recent vintage and from Detective Comics to Young Romance Comics, DC reprinted a variety of comics, spanning generations as well as genres.

The first issue of Batman in his own title certainly qualifies as a significant book and worthy of the gold seal treatment. Not only does this book include the first appearance of the Joker and the return of Hugo Strange, but also the initial version of Catwoman, then referred to as simply The Cat. This is a more brutal Batman, as evidenced by his willingness to use deadly methods to stop Hugo Strange’s monsters. The text piece by Denny O’Neil reveals that the issue was even more important by virtue of Batman being the only hero in the magazine, an unusual choice that reveals the confidence that this nascent character generated.
