Marvel Team-Up

By J.M. DeMatteis Kerry Gammill

Publisher: Marvel Comics

"Look Before You Leap!" is written by J.M. DeMatteis and drawn by Kerry Gammill and Mike Esposito. Guest-starring the Human Torch. First appearance of Frog-Man (Leap Frog II). This is a story about what makes a hero and what makes a friend. As heroes go, the Human Torch is as flashy as they come and still a popular sight among New Yorkers. Spider-Man is less popular but still the classic example of a hero to many residents of the Big Apple. When a quartet of liquor store robbers try to make off with the store owner's profits, both the Torch and Spidey set off to apprehend them, trading good-natured jibes along the way. But before the heroes can return the stolen money, it's grabbed by another crook: the super-swift Speed Demon!

While the Fantastic Four's youngest member and the wall-crawler take off after the lightning-fast criminal. But their showy take-off only seems to anger one Vincent Patilio, an ex-con who used to battle Daredevil as the less-than impressive Leap Frog. The public adoration of the Torch and Spidey only serves to make Patilio's failure as a super-criminal which sends him into a paroxysms of self-loathing. Seeing his father's anguish, Patilio's teenage son Gene decides to don the Leap Frog outfit and to become a hero to rehabilitate his father's image. But the police mistake him for a felon and the Speed Demon doesn't take him seriously. But when the Torch and Spidey fall before the super-speeding villain, only Frog-Man can save the day! Check out the homage to the Silver Age Flash artwork of Carmine Infantino on the cover.
