Black Panther (Ltd. Series) #4
By Peter B. Gillis, Denys Cowan
Marvel Comics, August, 1988

"A Cat Can Look At a King…" by Peter B. Gillis, Denys Cowan

Concluding the 1988 4 part mini-series The Panther Spirit which has empowered T’Challa all these years leaves him, summoned to the aid of a political prisoner from Wakanda being tortured in nearby Azania, a thinly fictionalized South Africa. The Panther Spirit starts an animalistic reign of terror and murder in Azania, a nice metaphor for the anger so many felt about the pre-reform apartheid regime. But T’Challa, as king of a neighboring nation, also respects the need for diplomacy, and sees the terror that will stem from open revolution...(From the Slings & Arrows Comic Guide)

T’Challa is the son of T’Chaka, ruler of the African kingdom of Wakanda. Educated in the U.S., he was forced to return home when his father was killed by perennial Spider-Man villain, Klaw. As the new ruler of Wakanda, T’Challa had to undergo a strange initiation rite which led to his gaining great strength and agility—and taking on the role of Wakanda’s protector, The Black Panther.

Black Panther is part of the expanding MCU- Marvel Cinematic Universe starring Chadwick Boseman
as Black Panther
