The Phantom Stranger is a fictional character of unspecified paranormal origins, who battles mysterious and occult forces in various DC Comics titles. Cover by Neal Adams. 1st Silver Age appearance of the Phantom Stranger in "Men Call Me the Phantom Stranger," script by Mike Friedrich, pencils by Jerry Grandenetti, inks by Bill Draut; Children huddle around a candle in a cave, talking about a "curse" that is about to hit the city; The Phantom Stranger appears, and hopes to puts the children at ease with a story. "The Three Signs of Evil...", script by John Broome, pencils by Carmine Infantino; In Columbus Circle in New York City, a group of sorcerers gather to make use of the full moonlight, using symbols on a board; Artist Mark Davis comes passing by, and unknowingly sketches out the symbols as his newest work of art; When the Stranger takes a look at Davis painting, he realizes that the symbols represent Columbus Circle, Times Square, and Washington Square. "I Talked with the Dead!", pencils by Leonard Starr, inks by Leonard Starr and Wayne Howard (traced & re-inked original); Before his fathers death, Dr. 13 the Ghost-Breaker [Dr. Thirteen] made a deal that they would meet up five years after his death; If ghosts were real, then this would prove it. 36 pgs., full color.

Showcase was an anthology series to spotlight various DC creations. Although many such titles are enjoyable reads, they usually have little importance in the larger view of the comics universe. Showcase is an exception to that rule. In issue #4, it introduced readers to Barry Allen, the Silver Age Flash. Four issues later, it gave us the fantastic first appearance of the Challengers of the Unknown.

Later issues would keep up the pace, bringing forth the first appearances of Anthro, Adam Strange, the Silver Age Green Lantern (Hal Jordan), the Silver Age Atom (Ray Palmer), Hawk and Dove, the Creeper, Rip Hunter…Time Master, the Sea Devils, and many others.

Having run for fourteen years between 1956 and 1970, the series came to an end with issue #93. It was later revived in 1977, running until issue #104
