Everybody Was Kung-Fu Dancing: Chronicles of the Lionized and the Notorious
by Chet Flippo
Publisher: St Martins Pr, 1991
Softcover

Essays, interviews & articles of rock reporter Chet Flippo.

As Chet Flippo sees it, the landscape of American popular culture is studded with scoundrels damned by whisky and saviors redeemed by rock-and-roll. In "Everybody Was Kung-Fu Dancing," a freewheeling collection of previously published profiles and essays, Mr. Flippo, a former editor at Rolling Stone and the author of "Your Cheatin' Heart," a biography of Hank Williams, is at home weaving tantalizing stories about maverick country musicians and their symbiotic relationships with motel clerks, roadhouse waitresses and overzealous fans. He depicts Jerry Lee Lewis grappling with the ghost of his nemesis, Elvis Presley, and he captures the loneliness of the rock pioneer Bill Haley driving drunk across the Texas plains. When the scene shifts to New York, Mr. Flippo's focus on such celebrities as Uma Thurman, Mick Jagger and Jack Henry Abbott is shallow, and his commentary on the trials of transplanted Texans is precious and self-important ("Being a full-time Texan is not an easy gig," he writes). However, his discussions with the film directors George Romero and Martin Scorsese are gritty and true to life. Yet Mr. Flippo's forte is the pop life, and at full boil "Everybody Was Kung-Fu Dancing" conveys the near-religious delirium of rock-and-roll.[NYT]
