Tom & Jerry

Publisher: Dell Comics

Our Gang Comics #1–39; Series continued in Tom & Jerry Comics #60

Our Gang Comics was launched by Dell in the early 1940s, and adapted the wildly popular kiddie comedy that was featured in movie shorts since the early days of film. The adventures of Buckwheat, Alfalfa, and the rest were told by a young Walt Kelly, whose later work on the strip Pogo enshrined him as one of the finest cartoonists of the century. Kelly’s fine style and uncanny knack for loopy logic helped animate what was otherwise predictable slapstick. Toward the end of the run, Our Gang began to cofeature the popular animated movie duo Tom & Jerry (a cat and mouse act where the mouse always wins!), who were at that time beating out Warner Brothers and Disney cartoons in the Oscar™ awards for best animated films. They eventually took over the book completely and the comic changed titles to Tom and Jerry Comics in the early 1950s.

Series continued from Our Gang with Tom & Jerry #59; Whitman publishes #328 onward

Tom and Jerry were one of the funniest and most popular cartoon teams, which started its run in the 1940s. Some of their zany animated shorts even won the Oscar award during their career on the big screen. Tom and Jerry’s adventures in print were chronicled by Dell, the kings of movie and television tie-ins, whose high standards of quality and kid-friendly approach guaranteed good reading for young tykes every time out. Tom, the perpetually scheming (and perpetually frustrated) cat, and his ally/adversary Jerry, the mouse, leaned heavily on violent, Three Stooges-like slapstick for their comedy. This approach has made them the butt of politically-correct criticism in recent years, as well as the subject of a brilliant parody (the Simpsons’ popular cartoon-within-a-cartoon, Itchy & Scratchy). The original comic version captures all the fun and excitement of Tom and Jerry that kids have enjoyed for over 50 years
