Universal Studios Monster Parodies
In the mid-1970s, DC and Marvel launched titles mixing horror and humor; a combination with its roots in the early Mad Magazines. While DC's Plop! featured surrealistic covers by Basil Wolverton and macabre madcap lunacy by Sergio Aragones, Marvel had Arrgh! with its zany Marie Severin covers and top-notch artistry inside. In this issue, artist/writer Tom Sutton gives a peek into "Gerald's World," a tiny little landscape dominated by the late night spook shows on TV. A failure at real life and unable to keep a job or attract a woman, Gerald finds his only pals are the city-crushing reptiles and dapper vampires that populate his black and white video screen. But when a freak occurrence draws Gerald into his TV set, he finds that when you have monsters for friends, you don't need any enemies.
Next, William Small is a small-minded man with a small apartment in the big city. And instead of healthy hobbies and interests, Small has a distinctively unhealthy obsession: he sees cockroaches everywhere! And after spending a fortune on pesticides and fumigating his apartment again and again, Small feels like he's won the war. But the roaches have one last trick up their icky little sleeves! "Bugged!" is written by Jack Younger and drawn by Alfredo Alcala. Then, in a flashback to Marvel's freaky '50s, dig the crazy antics of a kooky cat named "Frank N. Stein." Pay close attention to all the inside jokes; you won't want to miss a one!
