Who was the man known to us as Blueberry? This bizarre and unusual name belonged to a mysterious soldier of fortune whose trail can be followed through the history of the American West, a figure who appeared to have been involved in some of the most dramatic events in American history, but who always remained behind the scenes.

The West is rife with legends and tall tales of men such as Jesse James, Billy the Kid, the Dalton Brothers, Wild Bill Hitchcock, and even better known figures such as General George Armstrong Custer. But the casual researcher will be able to locate only a few, incomplete stories about the man named Blueberry. No pulps were written about him, no serials were made about his exploits and, until recently, his very existence had sunk into an obscurity that he would have most likely welcomed.

The definitive American reprints of the classic French western. This volume will contain a history of Blueberry by Jean-Michel Charlier and Jean-Marc Lofficier, reprints of Blueberry #'s (Epic) 1,2, and part of #3, and the first English language printing of "Three Black Birds", a Moebius written and illustrated Blueberry adventure. Introduction by Elmer Kelton.

MOEBIUS: Jean Henri Gaston Giraud (8 May 1938 – 10 March 2012) was a French artist, cartoonist, and writer, who worked in the Franco-Belgian bandes dessinées tradition. Giraud earned worldwide fame, predominantly under the pseudonym Mœbius, and to a lesser extent Gir, which he used for the Blueberry series and his paintings. Esteemed by Federico Fellini, Stan Lee and Hayao Miyazaki among others, he received international acclaim. He has been described as the most influential bandes dessinées artist after Hergé.

His most famous works include the series Blueberry, created with writer Jean-Michel Charlier, featuring one of the first anti-heroes in Western comics. Under the pseudonym Moebius he created a wide range of science fiction and fantasy comics in a highly imaginative and surreal, almost abstract style. His famous work in sci-fi include Arzach and the Airtight Garage of Jerry Cornelius. As Moebius, Giraud is also famous for collaborating with abstract filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky for an an unproduced adaptation of Dune and later created The Incal series together.

Moebius has contributed storyboards and concept designs to numerous science fiction and fantasy films, including Alien, The Abyss, and The Fifth Element. Ironically in 1997, Moebius and Jodorowsky sued Luc Besson for using The Incal as inspiration for Fifth Element, a lawsuit which they lost. Blueberry was adapted for the screen in 2004 by French director Jan Kounen.

Blueberry is a Franco-Belgian comics western series created by the Belgian scriptwriter Jean-Michel Charlier and French comics artist Jean "Mœbius" Giraud. It chronicles the adventures of Mike Blueberry on his travels through the American Old West. Blueberry is an atypical western hero; he is not a wandering lawman who brings evil-doers to justice, nor a handsome cowboy who "rides into town, saves the ranch, becomes the new sheriff and marries the schoolmarm." In any situation, he sees what he thinks needs doing, and he does it.

A 2004 film adaptation, Blueberry (U.S. release title is Renegade), was directed by Jan Kounen and starred Vincent Cassel in the lead role

It has been remarked that during the 1960s, Blueberry "was as much a staple in French comics as, say, The Avengers or The Flash here [in the USA]."[wiki]
