Hawkmoon: Jewel in the Skull #1
Michael Moorcock's tale of swords and sorcery set on the Earth of the far future comes to life under the pens of writer Gerry Conway and artists Rafael Kayanan and Alfredo Alcala. Our story begins in the court of Count Brass, the legendary Lord Guardian of the province of Karmarg, a haven of peace and learning amid wartorn Europe. However, although Count Brass wants little to do with the dark empire of Granbretan, he appreciates the peace its unifying conquest could bring. Lest Brass admire the cruel imperialists too much, his court philosopher Bowgentle reminds him of the torture Granbretan visits on those they crush.
However, Brass' young daughter Yisselda finds the touch of Granbretan's ambassador to Karmarg gentle enough at first. As Grand Constable of the Order of the Wolf and First Chieftain of the Armies under Granbretan's King Emperor Huan, Baron Meliadus of Kroiden has killed many a man. He comes to Brass' court to enlist his aid in pacifying the rest of Europe. When Brass refuses, Meliadus' attention turns to Yisselda. But when his touch turns rough, Yisselda rejects Meliadus and the ambassador and Count Brass cross swords. Spurned by both father and daughter, Meliadus returns to Granbretan and turns his efforts to breaking the spirit of the rebel Duke Hawkmoon of Koln. With the aid of a mystic black gem inserted in Hawkmoon's forehead, Meliadus intends to pit the rebel leader against Count Brass himself.
